The simplest approach is to add services to an existing shop, for example setting up a part-time post office in a village shop or indeed a shop in a pub and adding local transport information there. National charity Pub is the hub encourages pubs, communities and local authories to work together to support the provision of services in pubs. The Rural Shops Alliance has a list of helpful case studies from across the country that show how local shops can be created and improved. There’s great scope for innovation.

Beyond that you could see if a dedicated building could be found and work out how a viable financial proposition could be made to keep it running.

An alternative approach could be to run a ‘virtual hub’, with an on-line presence and visibility in the community by running stalls at key places and key times, such as on the local high street on Saturdays. This could be a good way to assess interests and needs in your local community in order to test the viability of something more permanent.
