Embed sustainable travel from the bottom up

Travel planning is an excellent way to embed good practice within workplaces, schools, leisure venues and so on. If sustainable travel messages come from within the community or workplace, they are more likely to be listened to than if coming from above. Because measures are tailored bottom up they are more likely to fit well. By looking at the pattern of trips to and from a ‘trip generator’ and by a combination of physical improvements as well as promotional materials can be tailored to have the maximum impact in reducing the number of cars travelling around with just one person in.

Some officials and politicians assume that businesses just want more better provision for driving and parking. By getting all these different types of places thinking differently and asking for sustainable travel improvements, local authorities if not government can be encouraged to prioritise sustainable travel further, creating a virtuous circle.
