It’s difficult to answer the question how local is local? It will really depend on your local area: in a city a local shop may be literally just round the corner but in a rural area it could be a few miles away. Whichever it is, it is still likely to be a vital part of the community.

The simplest thing to do is to promote local shops and services, so as to help ensure their continued viability and influence people where they spend their money. A list of ideas is contained in the step by step section. Where the continued viability of shop or service is under threat or where there is a lack of them in the first place you will need to do more than this. You may want to engage in the planning system if there is a new development proposed that could threaten the viability of existing shops or services. You might also propose planning policies that support viability and creation of new shops and services in your area. See the land use planning section for more information.

Going beyond this you may want to expand existing shops or bring together services, see the community hub section for more information.
