The Shop Smart, Shop Local initiative was set up by High Peak District Council in 2007. It aimed to raise awareness of the need to back local businesses in order to preserve the unique character and economic viability of the towns in the Peak District for generations to come. The campaign uses a distinctive logo and stickers displaying it are available for businesses to display in their window.
Through a toolkit containing marketing and promotional ideas for local businesses as well as a ‘10 reasons to shop local’ leaflet for consumers, it highlights different reasons to become engaged. Because the reasons giving for shopping local are so wide - whether tackling climate change, the fact that local business are more likely to support local charities or because there is a more responsive relationship with local customers - the campaign is able to engage with a wider range of people than if it focused on just one issue.
